Sun City Center bank robbed Friday afternoon

SUN CITY CENTER — A Wachovia Bank in Sun City Center was robbed Friday afternoon and Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies are investigating whether the man arrested has robbed other banks in the area.

According to deputies, at about 5:30 p.m., 41-year-old William Earl Yates walked into the bank at 1502 Sun City Center Plaza and handed a note to a teller, demanding money and implying that he had a gun.

Witnesses say they watched Yates drive away in a red vehicle, heading north on Interstate 75 from State Road 674.

When deputies found him on the interstate and pulled behind him, Yates started throwing cash out the window, deputies said.

He exited at Big Bend Road and pulled over after Sheriff's Office cars surrounded him.

Yates was charged with armed robbery. All the stolen cash was returned.
