Suspect seen stealing guardrails in Hillsborough caught after chase

TAMPA — A police chase ended Wednesday afternoon with the arrest of a man seen stealing guardrails, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies responded to a call at 2:40 p.m. about a person taking the barriers on Florida Avenue near Bearss Avenue. They spotted the man near a storm drain, and the suspect got into a vehicle and drove away.

A Sheriff's Office helicopter followed him. During the chase, deputies found that the vehicle was stolen, and Tampa police joined the pursuit.

Stop sticks flattened the vehicle's tires at Habana and Hillsborough avenues and the man got out and ran about 150 feet before being caught, deputies said.

Tampa police arrested Lawrence Preston Alford, 46, of Lutz. He's charged with grand theft, grand theft auto and fleeing and eluding.
