Tampa gang member accused of gunning down friend

TAMPA — A Tampa gang member was arrested Thursday in connection to a fatal shooting in April near a soccer field, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Julio Cesar Rodriguez, now 18, shot 16-year-old Noslen Careaga several times on April 12.

A Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy found Careaga's body about 6:30 a.m. along an access road near Shimberg Soccer Field, 7309 Baseball Ave., in Town 'N Country.

According to deputies, Rodriguez and Careaga, of Tampa, were friends and were walking together at the time of the shooting. Rodriguez is a member of the TNC Boyz gang and Careaga is a member of the Latin Kings gang.

Deputies said they identified Rodriguez after analyzing physical evidence and conducting interviews.

He was arrested at his apartment at 6802 Sussman Place.

Rodriguez faces a charge of first-degree murder. He was being held without bail at the Hillsborough County Jail.
