TAMPA — A 25-year-old man was arrested Thursday night after stabbing the boyfriend of his baby's mother and then taking his son, police said.
Jainese Cruz, 20, and her boyfriend Alexander Santiago, 37, were inside her apartment about 11:30 p.m. when her ex-boyfriend Jorge Torres knocked on the door and barged in.
Torres, armed with a knife, demanded Cruz hand over their 4-month-old baby. When Santiago got up to confront him, Torres stabbed him, grabbed the baby, and fled in a Honda, Tampa police said.
Police searched several addresses where Cruz's family said Torres may be hiding with his son. When officers spotted him at 7316 S Sherrill St., family members also arrived and began to punch him, police said.
The baby was recovered and Torres was arrested. He faces charges of burglary, aggravated battery, interference with child custody, domestic battery, marijuana possession, and resisting arrest without violence.
Santiago was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. The baby was returned to his mother.
Torres was booked into the Hillsborough County jail, where he remained early Friday.
