Tampa man charged in fatal stabbing of man left on sidewalk

TAMPA — Hillsborough sheriff's deputies have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a man who was found dead on the sidewalk in front of a Pebble Creek home Thursday.

Benjamin Lee Powell, 25, of Tampa is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Grant Woodham, also of Tampa, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said Saturday.

Woodham, 18, was found lying face-down Thursday night near the entrance to 9658 Fox Hearst Drive. It appeared Woodham had been stabbed by a metal object that was still protruding from his chest, Carter said.

The homeowner told authorities he did not know the man.

Deputies learned Woodham had recently left a friend's residence to sell drugs to an unknown man. Woodham drove his black 2010 Dodge Charger, which was not found at the scene where he was later discovered, Carter said.

Through numerous interviews, detectives learned of Powell and began surveillance on him, Carter said. Authorities did not disclose what, if any, connection Woodham had to Powell. On Friday evening, Woodham's car was located at 4601 E Citrus Circle in Tampa with Powell seated inside. Detectives arrested Powell, Carter said. Powell is also charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and marijuana possession. He is being held at the Orient Road Jail without bail.
