TAMPA — A man who called 911 and claimed he had killed someone with a cane was in Hillsborough County jail Friday charged with the murder of his father.

Police say Gregory Moran, 38, faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of Gregory James Walker, 60.

Moran called 911 Thursday afternoon and reported that he had killed someone, police said. When officers arrived at Moran's home at 5603 N 32nd St., they found Walker, his father, with injuries to his upper body, police said. Rescue personnel found Walker had a faint pulse. He was rushed to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police questioned Moran and later arrested him. Moran said he had wanted to kill Walker earlier that day but waited until 3 p.m., when he beat his father 30 to 50 times with a cane. Moran was being held in jail without bail.

He has a criminal record in Michigan and Virginia dating back to 1993, with charges ranging from manufacture of narcotics to carrying a concealed weapon.
