Tampa police arrest suspect in shooting; victim in critical condition

TAMPA — Police on Thursday arrested a man they say shot someone and then ran away.

Police found Walter L. Wright, 59, lying in front of 1006 E 22nd Ave. at 10:17 p.m. Wednesday. Police reported a suspect wearing dark clothes running away.

An officer later caught Eugene S. Harris Jr., 34 of St. Petersburg, in a nearby alley.

Harris was uncooperative and denied shooting Wright, police said. But witnesses identified him as the shooter.

Wright was in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital. Harris was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was being held Thursday on $15,250 bail at the Hillsborough County Jail.
