Suspect arrested, another sought after exchanging gunfire with Tampa officers during traffic stop

TAMPA -- One suspect is in custody and Tampa police were searching for another late Wednesday after gunfire was exchanged during a traffic stop.

According to police, officers conducted a bicycle stop near the corner of Central and Floribraska avenues around 1 a.m. after spotting two men in dark clothing riding without lights.

The suspects fled and at least one of them fired shots at an officer who was pursuing them, police said.

An officer who returned fire was not injured, police said, and it does not appear that any of the suspects were injured. Two handguns were found at the scene, police said.

Police arrested Israel Magwood, 19, of Tampa, north of Floribraska Avenue a short time later. The second suspect still being sought.

Magwood is being held at the Hillsborough County Jail on $8,250 bail, jail records show. He faces charges including burglary and resisting an officer without violence.

Several blocks of Floribraska, and the southbound exit ramp off Interstate 275 to Floribraska, were closed during the investigation.
