Tampa police arrest suspect in Friday shooting death

TAMPA — Police arrested a man Monday they suspect of killing another man found fatally shot on a sidewalk.

Marlin Johnson, 30, faces a charge of first-degree murder in the death of James N. King, 38, who was found Friday morning in front of 8704 N Brooks St. in Tampa.

King, of Valrico, had been shot to death, police said. Detectives said Friday that they believed he was specifically targeted.

It is unclear what led investigators to Johnson, but records show he has a lengthy history of arrests in Hillsborough County, including for charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, grand theft auto and burglary. Records show he has also served four stints in state prison. He was last released in 2012 after serving a year for a conviction of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
