Tampa sex offender accused of molesting 12-year-old girl

TAMPA — A 48-year-old sex offender was arrested Thursday, accused of molesting a 12-year-old girl, police said.

The girl told Tampa police that since last year, Edison Leonard Balcom molested her more than a dozen times, an arrest affidavit shows. In a phone call recorded by investigators, Balcom admitted to the girl's mother that he had touched her.

The girl and Balcom knew each other.

Balcom, a registered sex offender, also had failed to update his address with authorities, the affidavit shows.

He faces charges of sexual battery, lewd or lascivious conduct and failing to report as a sex offender.

Balcom was booked into the Hillsborough County jail, where he remained Friday in lieu of $1.2-million bail.
