Tampa woman accused of leaving sons, ages 3 and 4, inside car

TAMPA — A 35-year-old woman accused of leaving her sons, ages 3 and 4, in a car while she went grocery shopping was arrested Monday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Kimberly Denise Simmons, of Tampa, parked at the Walmart at 2701 Fletcher Ave. about 5:30 p.m. and left her sons unsupervised inside the car while she entered the store, an arrest affidavit says.

Within about 30 minutes, Simmons returned to her car to find that the 4-year-old was missing.

Walmart employees found the boy wandering the store by himself, the affidavit says.

Deputies arrested Simmons at the Walmart. She faces child neglect without harm and an unrelated charge of driving with a suspended or revoked license.

Simmons was booked into the Hillsborough County jail, where she remained Tuesday in lieu of $500 bail.
