TEMPLE TERRACE — A 25-year-old man was jailed Monday night after police say he tried to attack the mother of his child with a butcher knife and injured one of their children in the process.

Around 6:40 p.m., Rory Andre Sean Smith of Autumn Place Drive was arguing with the 24-year-old woman when he pushed her to the ground and brandished the knife, according to an arrest affidavit. Smith and the woman have two children and live together, police said.

The woman crawled under an overturned playpen with a 6-month-old child, police said, and Smith stabbed the playpen several times.

The child was left with a small cut over his left eye, the report states.

Smith then fled the apartment, but was caught at the entrance to the complex. He was arrested on charges of child abuse, battery and aggravated assault.
