Temple Terrace man arrested in sexual assault of 17-year-old girl

TEMPLE TERRACE — A 32-year-old man was arrested Sunday, accused of beating and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl while she was drugged, police said.

Matthew Gaetano of Temple Terrace punched, strangled and pushed a pillow against the girl's face early Sunday, an arrest affidavit shows. Gaetano also took her cellphone and pushed her back into an apartment when she tried to leave several times.

The girl told Temple Terrace police she and Gaetano had consensual sex on June 16. But the next day while she was under the effects of crystal methamphetamine, she "was not capable of making decisions" when they had sex.

Gaetano resisted arrest on Sunday. Officers handcuffed him after placing him against a wall, an affidavit shows.

Gaetano faces several charges, including child abuse, false imprisonment, sexual battery and unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

He was booked into the Hillsborough County jail, where he remained Monday afternoon in lieu of $113,000 bail.
