Thieves lose spare tire while trying to drag ATM out of Walgreens

TAMPA — Deputies are searching for two men caught on surveillance video trying to steal an ATM from a Walgreens.

The two men broke into the store at 6503 W Waters Ave. about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. One thief smashed the window next to the front door while the other reached in and tied a copper wire around the store's ATM, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The wire was chained to the spare tire underneath the thieves' small, dark-colored SUV.

Once the ATM was tied up, the thieves sped off, but the machine ripped the spare tire off the SUV and popped the trunk open. Deputies said one of the men shut the trunk and drove away.

Damage to the window and ATM was estimated at $5,500.

Deputies said the two men were wearing black hooded sweatshirts with black denim jeans and gloves.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-873-8477.
