Two 16-year-old boys were on bicycle that struck, killed man

CLEARWATER — Two 16-year-old boys were on the bicycle that hit and killed a 39-year-old Clearwater man Sunday night on Memorial Causeway, police said Tuesday afternoon.

Police are not yet releasing the boys' names because the investigation is ongoing and authorities have not yet decided if they will pursue criminal charges, police spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts said.

The two boys were speeding west down the Memorial Causeway Bridge at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday. One of the boys was pedaling the bicycle while the other was on the handlebars. They collided with Dean Anthony Bartolo, who was walking in the opposite direction.

Bartolo incurred injuries to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. The two boys were taken to a hospital but they did not suffer serious injuries. They were both treated and released.

Watts said she did not know if the boys were residents of Clearwater.
