TAMPA — Two people are accused of using a charity for disabled police officers to con local businesses.
Todd Norwood, 46, and Kimberly Upright, 45, both of 5704 Candlewick Court, each face charges of organized fraud, petty theft and two counts of unlawful use of a badge. They were being held at the Hillsborough County jail in lieu of $5,250 bail.
Police said a man called the Sweet Tomatoes restaurant at 1902 N Dale Mabry Highway for several days soliciting money on behalf of the Disabled Police Officers of America.
On Tuesday, Upright went to the restaurant and handed the manager a thank-you letter and a pledge form, police said.
A manager became suspicious when Upright asked for cash, police said.
When police showed up, Norwood and Upright left.
Tampa detectives contacted the Disabled Police Officers of America and learned that the two were not authorized to raise money for the group and were awaiting trial in Orlando for the same scam in that area, police said.
During an interview with detectives, Upright said he had gone to hundreds of businesses — mainly restaurants and gas stations — seeking donations. Another business said it also was hit by the scam, police said.
Tampa detectives said they think Upright and Norwood will continue to ask for donations when they are released from jail and want employees to be aware of the scam.
Employees are asked to call the Tampa Police Department at (813) 231-6130.
