Two arrested at cockfight in Hillsborough, deputies say

WIMAUMA — A man and a juvenile were arrested Wednesday after Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said they discovered a small group huddled around a cockfight at a private residence.

Deputies said they received a call about an animal fight at 5571 Highway 674 around 3:30 p.m. They found three people watching the fight to the death, said sheriff's spokesman Larry McKinnon. One man ran away.

Ismael Villareal, 20, of Wimauma, was charged with attending a animal fight. He was being held at the Hillsborough County Jail in lieu of $2,000 bail. A 15-year-old boy faces the same charge.

After investigating the property, deputies found one dead rooster lying on the ground and 13 more in cages or tied to trees, suggesting an ongoing operation, McKinnon said.

McKinnon said there are about two or three cases like this a year.

"Unfortunately, it's common," he said.

The owner and renter at the residence were not charged.
