PINELLAS PARK — Two 17-year-old Boca Ciega High School students were arrested for bringing a semi-automatic handgun with them to a Friday night football game at Pinellas Park High School, police said.

The two teenagers were each arrested on one count of possessing a handgun on school property, according to Pinellas Park police.

A spectator told police they saw the teens showing the gun off while it was inside a backpack during the game between Pinellas Park and Boca Ciega high schools. Police said it was a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun loaded with two rounds.

The students told police they had taken the gun with them to school at Boca Ciega earlier that day in St. Petersburg.

Police said the gun was not reported stolen and they do not know how the students obtained the weapon. The Tampa Bay Times is withhold the names of the students because of their ages.

"Pinellas County Schools takes student safety seriously," said Pinellas County Schools spokeswoman Lisa Wolf. "Weapons are not permitted on any school campus. The school district will assist the Pinellas Park Police Department as they complete their investigation, and disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct."
