Two men in custody in Clearwater shooting; school lockdown over

CLEARWATER — Police have two men in custody after shots were fired at a vehicle this morning near Skycrest Park.

No one was injured, according to police spokeswoman Beth Watts.

Clearwater Police received a call at 10 a.m. that two men in a van had fired shots at another vehicle near Harvard Street and Duncan Avenue, Watts said.

When police found a van matching the description and attempted to pull it over in the vicinity of Sherwood Street and Amble Lane, two men got out and ran.

Police set up a perimeter and brought it a K-9 unit to look for the men, who had been driving a stolen vehicle.

Police took one of the men into custody shortly after the incident. The second was found later. Police recovered the gun believed to have been used in the shooting.

During the search, four nearby schools — Clearwater Fundamental, Clearwater Intermediate, Sandy Lane Elementary and Calvin Hunsinger School — were placed on lock-out, meaning no one was allowed to come into the facilities. The lock-outs have since been lifted.

It's unclear who the men were targeting.

Police are still investigating.
