Valrico man who fatally shot brother-in-law released from jail

VALRICO — A man who fatally shot the brother-in-law who broke into his home Monday night was released from jail early Wednesday on drug-related charges.

Shawn Berg, 39, fired at his wife's brother John Danco around 11 p.m. Monday after Danco kicked in the garage door of Berg's two-story house at 2005 Cimmaron Run Drive, threatening to beat him up, deputies said.

Danco, 37, died on the garage floor. Berg called 911 to report the shooting.

While investigating the shooting Tuesday morning, detectives discovered methamphetamine and Oxycontin in Berg's home. He was arrested and faces two charges of possession of methamphetamine. Deputies have not charged him in Danco's death.

Berg was released from the Hillsborough County jail early Wednesday on $4,000 bail.
