Riverview woman badly wounded in St. Petersburg shooting

ST. PETERSBURG — A woman waiting in her boyfriend's car as men fought nearby was shot in the head and wounded early Sunday when the dispute escalated into gunfire, police said.

The 18-year-old, identified as Rubi Yajaira Rosado of Riverview, was described by police as stable and expected to recover.

About 3 a.m., St. Petersburg police received several calls about shots being fired in the area of 66th Avenue N and 14th Street N, an agency spokesman said. While going to investigate, officers got word a victim had shown up nearby at a Checkers restaurant at 6200 Dr. Martin Luther King St. N.

Police said their investigation found that Rosado was with a group of men who had driven to 6603 14th St. N in an ongoing dispute with residents there. Police said they were investigating what the fight was about.

While Rosado waited in her boyfriend's car, several men began fighting outside the home and gunfire erupted. A bullet struck her, police said.

Her boyfriend drove her to the Checkers to summon help. She was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

A police spokesman said investigators have not yet determined who fired the shot and have not made any arrest.
