Woman battered and raped in Ybor parking garage in broad daylight

TAMPA — A woman in her late 30s was attacked and raped in an Ybor city parking garage Wednesday afternoon, according to Tampa police.

At 2:56 p.m., the woman was headed to her car in the Fernando Norega Jr. - Palm Avenue Parking Garage, when a man punched her in the face and sexually assaulted her, said Lt. Mike Baumaister, a police spokesman. She was cornered on the second floor near the entrance at N 13th Street and E Eighth Avenue.

Sex crime detectives were able to quickly identify a person of interest and were interviewing him as of 9:17 p.m., Baumaister said.

The identity of the victim is not being revealed because of the nature of the crime.
