Hillsborough deputies: Ex-boyfriend fatally shoots woman, then turns gun on himself

WIMAUMA — Joanna Morales was sitting in her grandparents' living room Tuesday night when she heard arguing in the bedroom shared by her mother's friend, and the friend's 7-year-old son.

"Then I heard someone go, 'Ahhh,' and heard three gunshots," Joanna, 13, said. They boy ran to the living room, yelling "They killed my mom, they killed my mom."

Santos Simiona Gonzalez-Lopez, a 32-year-old migrant worker from Mexico, was fatally shot three times by her ex-boyfriend, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

It started about 9:20 p.m., when deputies said Leopoldo Galarza-Espinosa, 45, banged on the door at 3317 Willow Road and demanded that the woman who broke up with him three weeks before let him inside.

When he was finally allowed in, deputies said Galarza-Espinosa started arguing with his ex-girlfriend, then told her two people were going to die. After shooting her, deputies said Galarza-Espinosa then shot himself in the head. They were both found lying on a bed. She had no pulse, while he was still breathing.

Before he was taken to Tampa General Hospital, deputies said Galarza-Espinosa repeated the phrase "It's because I found her with someone else," and asked if "she was (okay.)" He was reported to be in stable condition. He faces a charge of first-degree murder.

Joanna Morales said Galarza-Espinosa supported two children in Mexico and was a good friends with her mother, Anastacia Luviano.

"Buena persona, siempre riendose," Luviano said when asked to describe Gonzalez-Lopez. A good person, always laughing.
