SPRING HILL —A woman was arrested Monday on charges of animal cruelty after deputies said they found injured animals at her Spring Hill home.

Jennie Card, 44, was arrested on two counts of animal cruelty. A Florida Department of Children and Families investigator, concerned about the living conditions in a home that included a child and 24 dogs, called the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, according to the report.

During the search, they discovered the home had no running water and a floor "completely covered in fecal matter and urine," deputies said. They also found two cats and two birds. The stench of urine was so strong, deputies said, that it could be smelled outside the home.

Deputies said they found a dog with bones poking out of a back paw bandaged with duct tape. They also found a cat with a neck wound covered in pus, deputies said.

Deputies said the animals were taken by Animal Services, and the child was taken by DCF.

Card told deputies said she couldn't afford medical treatment for the animals. She said she was their primary caregiver. Her bond is set at $2,000.
