'Person of interest' in Brandon double murder surrenders

BRANDON — The man authorities were seeking in connection with the deaths of two women found in a charred Brandon townhouse turned himself in Friday afternoon.

Charles A. Martinez, 24, walked into the Hillsborough County Courthouse with his attorney about 4 p.m., the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. Martinez was wanted on unrelated warrants charging him with armed home invasion and false imprisonment before Thursday, when his name came up in the investigation into the women found dead at 1528 Highland Ridge Circle. Martinez was a part-time resident of the townhouse, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee.

The Sheriff's Office identified one of the victims Friday: Lindsay Nicole Greene, 25, who neighbors said lived in the townhouse with her young son. The son is staying with relatives, a neighbor said.

The second victim has not been identified, the Sheriff's Office said, and may not be for several days.

The bodies were found amid the heavily fire damaged home, and Gee said the blaze was likely set to destroy evidence of the homicides.

The victims were found after a neighbor complained of smelling smoke. The fire was out when Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived, and may have been extinguished for some time. The cause of death for the victims has not been released. The Sheriff's Office said the women died from "homicidal violence" and they consider Martinez a "person of interest."

Martinez, of Brandon, has served more than two years in state prison on convictions including shooting into a building or vehicle and criminal mischief with property damage. He was released in October, according to Florida Department of Corrections records.

Anyone with information about him or the deaths of Greene and the other woman can call the Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200.

Times staff writer Jessica Vander Velde and researcher John Martin contributed to this report.
