ANNA MARIA ISLAND — A 21-year-old man spearfishing in the Gulf of Mexico was bitten by what appeared to be a shark Saturday afternoon, the Manatee County Sheriff's office said.
Charles Wickersham, of Longboat Key, was with several other people in a boat about 3 to 6 miles off the coast when the incident occurred at about 3 p.m., deputies said. Deputies said Wickersham was bitten in his left thigh. The injury did not appear to be life-threatening.
He was brought to the Rod and Reel Pier and taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center.
