Deputy, woman injured in rear-end collision in Largo

LARGO — A Pinellas deputy and an 18-year-old woman were hospitalized with minor injuries Tuesday after an early-morning crash on Ulmerton Road.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, Lt. Kevin Bennett was westbound on Ulmerton Road in his agency-issued 2007 Chevrolet Impala when he was rear-ended by Ashley Lambert.

Lambert was behind Bennett when he stopped to yield to an ambulance that was traveling southbound on Seminole Boulevard in emergency mode, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Lambert saw Bennett but was unable to stop in time and hit the rear of the cruiser.

The accident happened on Lambert's 18th birthday.

Bennett was on duty at the time of the crash. The 24-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office is a shift commander for the patrol division.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged and had to be towed from the scene.

An investigation is ongoing.
