ST. PETERSBURG — Rescuers searched Sunday evening near Fort De Soto Park for a Pinellas Park man who was reported to have gotten in the water to fix his boat but did not resurface, authorities said.
Late Sunday, authorities identified the missing boater as Michael Douglas Rhine, 49.
At about 4:45 p.m., the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission searched for hours at Bunces Pass between Shell Key and Fort De Soto.
Bunces Pass is known for its treacherous currents, which can be challenging for boaters and deadly for swimmers.
Authorities said their search, which had not yet located him, was in response to a 911 call.
