SAFETY HARBOR — A 62-year-old man died Wednesday after turning his car into the path of another on Philippe Parkway, deputies said.

The man was driving near Avon Drive about 6:40 p.m. in a 2008 Kia Spectra south when witnesses saw him weaving on the road, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. Then, deputies say, the man made a sudden sharp left turn into the northbound lane and into the path of a northbound Toyota Avalon.

The Avalon struck the Kia on the passenger side, then the Kia struck a utility pole. The Kia driver was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and pronounced dead. Deputies have not released his name because they were still working to notify his family.

The Toyota driver, 19-year-old Brendan Burke of Clearwater, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, deputies said.

Investigators do not believe speed or impairment were factors in the crash.
