Father, daughter nearly drown in Largo pool

LARGO — A man and his 2-year-old daughter nearly drowned Tuesday in an apartment complex swimming pool, authorities said.

Jose Montes, 28 and his daughter Angela, who turns 3 next week, were rescued by a bystander who noticed them at the bottom of a cloudy pool about 5:30 p.m.

Montes, the toddler and his other two children, ages 6 and 10, were among about 50 people at the Brittany Bay Apartments pool, which had just been treated and opened Monday. The Montes family lives at the complex, 1201 Seminole Blvd.

"At some point he and the (daughter) went under the water," said Largo police Sgt. Mark Young. "But because of the cloudiness of the water, it was not noticed at first."

The pair was under the water for about five minutes, police said.

Bystanders performed CPR until first responders arrived.

Montes was in serious condition Tuesday night at Bayfront Medical Center, Young said. His daughter is recovering at All Children's Hospital.

Alcohol is a factor in the incident, Young said. Police are still investigating.
