Fire destroys St. Petersburg apartment

ST. PETERSBURG — Fire officials are investigating the cause of an early morning blaze that destroyed a small apartment.

The fire began about 4:26 a.m. at 2533 H Queensboro Ave. S, a 790-square-foot, wood-frame apartment. When St. Petersburg firefighters arrived, the building was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters battled the flames while dodging live power lines that were burned off the back structure by the intense heat. They had the fire under control in about 18 minutes. Damage is estimated at about $37,000.

No one was home at the time of the fire and the house appeared to be vacant and without power to the inside, fire officials said. There were no working smoke alarms in the home.

The fire's origin appears to be suspicious and fire officials are investigating.
