Brooksville man killed in house fire identified

BROOKSVILLE — Authorities have identified the body of a 26-year-old Brooksville man who was killed last week in a house fire.

Joseph "Joey" John Berner was the man fatally injured in the blaze at the house at 21423 Powell Road on the evening of June 30, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday.

Berner, who was found dead in a shed behind the home just south of Brooksville, was identified through dental records from the Medical Examiner's Office.

Fire officials said the 6 p.m. blaze did not appear to have been suspicious.

The blaze destroyed the shed and a quarter of the house.

The Hernando County Fire Marshal's Office is still conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.
