Burning car forces evacuation of Tampa Publix

TAMPA — A burning car forced the evacuation of a Publix Friday morning, authorities said.

Tampa Fire Rescue was called to the Publix at 2401 W Azeele St. about 11 a.m. and found a black 1991 Mazda Millenia burning in the parking garage. A sprinkler in the garage kept the flames under control until firefighters arrived, according to Fire Rescue. Crews got the blaze under control in about 15 minutes.

The Publix had been evacuated prior to their arrival, Fire Rescue said. A vent truck was used to force fresh air into the garage and store. After about two hours, customers and employees were allowed back into the Publix. No one was injured, Fire Rescue said. A fire investigator determined an electrical malfunction caused the fire, and ruled it an accident.
