Families displaced by Largo apartment complex fire

An overnight fire at a Largo apartment complex damaged multiple units and left at least one person injured.

Largo Fire Rescue units were called to the Bay Point Apartments on Roosevelt Boulevard about 12:40 a.m. Friday, Largo Fire Rescue Deputy Chief David Mixson said. Two units were on fire, and flames stretched so high that crews were contacted by concerned firefighters at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport 2 miles away.

The complex's residents had been evacuated by the time firefighters arrived, Mixson said, but several were examined by crews at the scene. One was transported to Morton Plant Hospital. Several pets, including cats and dogs, were killed in the blaze, Mixson said.

Power was cut off to the entire complex while crews brought the fire under control. Crews were still investigating the fire's cause early Friday.
