Fire at Hillsborough apartment complex leaves 5 homeless

TAMPA — Five people were left without homes Thursday evening when a fire broke out in their apartment complex, authorities said.

Crews were called about 5:40 p.m. to a fire in a single-story apartment complex at 2804 University Square Drive.

The blaze was doused in about 25 minutes, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, and all the occupants got out safely.

Still, three apartments sustained severe fire damage and four sustained smoke damage, according to the agency.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation.
