TAMPA — Fire ripped through the roof of an apartment building early Monday, displacing residents in at least 10 units, authorities said.

Tampa Fire Rescue crews responding to Knollwood Manor Apartments, 2932 Rockaway Court, arrived to find heavy smoke and flames shooting from the roof and windows of an apartment on the south side of the two-story, brick building. It took about two hours to get the fire under control. Authorities closed a portion of Sligh Avenue so crews could battle the blaze.

The fire destroyed the roof over at least 10 of the building's dozen units, according to Tampa Fire Rescue. Footage from television news helicopters showed charred rafters extending over the interior of the apartments.

A tenant told investigators she woke after the smoke alarm in her apartment went off. Other tenants were able to spread the word to make sure everyone got out safely. No injuries were reported.

Investigators were still working to determine the cause of the fire. The Red Cross is helping displaced residents.
