Fire started by lightning damages Tarpon Springs home

TARPON SPRINGS — A large waterfront home owned by a Pinellas County oral surgeon was damaged Monday after lightning sparked a fire.

The 9,183-square-foot house at 1235 Florida Ave. is owned by Coastal Jaw Surgery founder Dr. Michael A. Pikos, according to property records. The home's value was last assessed for tax purposes at $1.1 million.

Firefighters were called to the three-story home in the early afternoon as a series of thunderstorms rumbled through the area. After dousing the smoky fire, they were making a sweep through the structure when they discovered another blaze. Eventually, some 30 emergency units responded to the fire.

Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Donald Sayre said the fire was brought under control by 5 p.m.

Initial reports indicated a man and woman evacuated the three-story home after the lightning strike. Family pets were rescued.

Peter Jamison can be reached at or (727) 445-4157.
