Firefighters contain Lithia brush fire

LITHIA — A group of kids playing with fireworks Friday set off a brush fire that burned 10 acres, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze in the area around 5720 Osprey Ridge Drive, near Bevis Elementary School.

But the fire threatened some houses and burned two PVC fences, officials said.

Twenty units and 40 firefighters responded to reports of a fire at 3 p.m.

It took crews about one hour to stop the fire about 20 to 30 feet from a few houses, officials said.

Investigators later determined that the fire was accidental.

The children involved and their parents must participate in a fire safety program.

  3. Bar review: Cheap drinks do fine at the Joint in St. Petersburg

    Bars & Spirits

The Tyrone area of St. Petersburg is a little light on drinking spots, so the locals must have been happy when a long-running neighborhood spot — formerly Donk's Sports Tavern and Double J's Sports Bar — reopened earlier this year as the Joint.

  4. Local Craft Beer of the Week: Fireberry Tea Ale, Sea Dog Brewing Co.

    Bars & Spirits

Clearwater's Sea Dog Brewing Co. doesn't get enough credit. But this location, opened in 2013, features its …

  5. Jeff Bezos tops Bill Gates as world's richest person — for now

    Corporate

A surge in Amazon.com Inc. shares Thursday morning in advance of the online retailer's earnings report has propelled founder Jeff Bezos past Bill Gates as the world's richest person, according to a Bloomberg report.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, discusses his Blue Origin reusable rocket project in Colorado Springs in April. A bump in the price of Amazon shares in July of 2017 was enough to move Bezos above Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, who has topped Forbes' billionaires list 18 out of the last 23 years.
