Fires reported hours apart at vacant St. Petersburg building

ST. PETERSBURG — Investigators were looking into two different reports of fires inside a vacant building Wednesday afternoon, fire rescue said.

Firefighters arrived at the apartment building at 409 Eighth St. N just after 1 p.m. and discovered two small fires on the first and second floors.

The fires were extinguished and the building was boarded up, said St. Petersburg Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Joel Granata. Homeless people had been living inside the building, which had an order for demolition requested earlier this week.

At 4:30 p.m., fire rescue received another call about the same building.

"Somebody actually broke in after we left and started another fire," Granata said.

An investigation remained under way Thursday.
