A Hillsborough County firefighter is being commended for helping a group of Manatee County residents escape a house fire that he spotted while on his way to work Saturday.

Clint Walker, who is assigned to Fire Station No. 28 in Sun City Center, was on his way to work from his Bradenton home Saturday when he helped evacuated a house that had erupted in flames.

Walker spotted a column of black smoke about 6:30 a.m. as he passed through a Bradenton neighborhood, Hillsborough County fire officials said. He found the smoke streaming from a duplex at 610 21 St. W, where flames had engulfed a car and spread to the back of the building.

Walker dialed 911 to make Bradenton firefighters aware of the blaze. He then began knocking on the doors and windows of the home, telling the residents to get out, authorities said. Four people, who were asleep inside, awoke and got out unharmed.
