Investigators: Clearwater apartment fire was arson

CLEARWATER — Fire investigators said the early Sunday apartment fire that forced a 70-year-old man to jump from a second-floor window was arson.

Cleveland Malcolm, 70, was sleeping in his 2029 Alpine Road apartment when the blaze broke out.

He and his daughter, Kristi Kelly, 46, were displaced. Kelly was not home at the time of the fire.

Malcolm declined treatment.

Firefighters fought the blaze for about 15 minutes.

It was contained to the second floor of an apartment unit, with a few other units suffering smoke damage. The fire caused about $30,000 in damage.

The investigation is ongoing.
