Man escapes fire in St. Petersburg home

A St. Petersburg man was treated for smoke inhalation Thursday after a fire tore through his home.

A St. Petersburg Fire Rescue spokesman said the man was inside the house at 2576 14th Ave. S with several dogs when the fire began about 11:50 a.m. He managed to escape with his pets but needed treatment for smoke inhalation, the spokesman said.

Crews aren't yet sure what started the fire or the extent of the damage to the house. Flames reached into the attic, the spokesman said, and crews were still working to extinguish the fire about 12:30 p.m.
