Man found dead during Largo fire is identified

LARGO — Authorities are still investigating the cause of death of a man found during an apartment fire Saturday morning.

David Jervis, 59, was found unresponsive on a chair in his living room in the midst of a fire that started in his bedroom, according to Largo Fire Chief Mike Wallace.

Firefighters responded at about 6:15 a.m. Saturday to a report of a burning smell at the Laguna Vista Apartments, 555 Belcher Road S. When they arrived, heavy smoke was pouring out the window of a second-floor apartment.

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental, according to Largo police Lt. Mike Loux, but authorities are awaiting the toxicology report on Jervis to determine if his death was caused by the fire.

A ceramic ashtray was found on the bed, Wallace said. Firefighters quickly put out the fire. There were no working smoke detectors in the apartment.
