Man suffers burns while fighting fire in his St. Petersburg home

ST. PETERSBURG — A 74-year-old man suffered second- and third-degree burns after he fell unconscious while fighting a fire in his home Sunday.

The man, whose name was not released by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue on Sunday night, was transported to Bayfront Hospital in critical condition.

The man was with a grandson around 4:30 p.m. at 531 38th Ave N when they smelled smoke in a porch area that had been converted to a room, said Division Chief Joe Bruni,

"He went back there and tried to fight the fire himself. The grandfather was overcome by smoke," Bruni said.

Bruni said firefighter Lt. Heidi Schiller and firefighter Adam Leprevost were responsible for locating and rescuing the man, who was unconscious inside.

Bruni said the man was in cardiac arrest when brought outside, but was resuscitated. The man was awaiting transport to the burn unit at Tampa General Hospital Sunday night, according to fire officials.

The state fire marshal is investigating the fire's cause.
