Medical examiner: Hillsborough firefighter died of heart disease

TAMPA — A Hillsborough County firefighter who died Sunday while on duty succumbed to a heart attack, according to the county medical examiner's office.

An autopsy conducted Monday morning confirmed that Iran D. Rivers, 48, had "hypertensive heart disease," which resulted in his death, the medical examiner's office reported. The manner of death was listed as "natural."

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials previously declined to reveal details of the circumstances of the firefighter's death, describing it simply as a "medical incident."

Funeral preparations were still in the works Monday afternoon.
