More than 100 evacuate Westfield Countryside Mall in Clearwater after golf cart fire

CLEARWATER — More than 100 people were evacuated from Westfield Countryside Mall late Thursday morning after a golf cart caught fire, officials said.

Clearwater Fire and Rescue responded to a maintenance bay between Dillard's and JC Penney at the mall, 27001 U.S. 19 N, just before 11:15 a.m. It took about 10 minutes to put out the blaze.

Due to the size of the mall, 10 units and more than 35 firefighters responded to the scene, fire officials said.

Both Dillard's and JC Penney were evacuated until the smoke dissipated. Everyone was allowed back in the stores by early afternoon.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the blaze. An investigation was under way.
