Northbound lanes open after car catches fire on Sunshine Skyway

Firefighters extinguished a car fire on the Sunshine Skyway, but the blaze backed up traffic for miles Thursday morning, firefighters said.

Northbound lanes reopened about 8:40 a.m., nearly an hour after a car caught fire just south of the center span of the bridge, said Lt. Joel Granata, St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue spokesman. It would take a little while for the traffic backup to shake out, he said.

Firefighters from Manatee and St. Petersburg responded to the fire, confined to the bridge's northbound lanes, and the fire was out by 7:45 a.m., he said.

Traffic in the southbound lanes was unaffected.

Vehicles heading north were stopped as officials worked to clear the scene where the small green car caught fire. The car was pushed off to the emergency lane, and one northbound lane was closed for about an hour.

No one was injured.
