A brush fire that spanned across thousands of acres in Polk County and prompted the evacuation of at least 800 homes early Wednesday is under control Thursday morning, according to state fire officials.

The evacuation order was lifted early Thursday morning for Indian Lake Estates, an area where Polk County Fire Rescue said the fire burned through more than 1,500 acres.

The fire was first reported around 11:19 a.m. Wednesday near 7200 Highway 630 E in Frostproof, according to officials.

The fire is contained, fire officials said, as crews continued to put out hot spots Thursday morning.

Several homes were damaged, but the exact number and extent of the damage is not known yet, officials said.

There were no injuries reported in the blaze.
