Firefighter hospitalized in blaze that destroys Tampa furniture store (w/video)

TAMPA — One firefighter was injured in a Sunday night fire that destroyed a furniture store, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

Fire crews were sent to Southern Used Furniture at 8133 N Nebraska Ave. about 10:35 p.m. and said they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the single-story brick structure. A second crew was called because of the building's contents and to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent businesses.

The fire caused the building's roof to collapse, fire officials said, and aerial units were called to help contain the blaze after intense heat caused firefighters to exit at one point. One firefighter was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, officials said.

The business owner was in the building at the time of the fire but was able to escape unharmed, officials said. The fire was brought under control by 1 a.m. Monday. No nearby businesses suffered major damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The building was destroyed and damage is estimated at about $165,000, said Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Penny.
