Section of Friendship Trail Bridge catches fire Thursday

A small blaze damaged part of the Friendship Trail Bridge Thursday afternoon.

A Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman said firefighters were called to the bridge, north of the Gandy Bridge on the Pinellas County end, about 12:45. A 30-foot section of the wooden boardwalk leading to the end of the former pedestrian bridge was smouldering, the spokesman said.

The fire wasn't reachable by fire truck, so a boat with a water cannon was called and extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes.

Firefighters don't know what caused the fire on the pedestrian walkway. It was closed in 2008 because of structural problems.
